“Not Your Year” features on-camera performances of terrific original songs by nationally known recording artists. Dawn & Hawkes wowed audiences and judges with their debut performance on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2014. This talented duo performs two of their songs in “Not Your Year.” Andy Allo also performs one of her songs. Andy was quickly discovered by Prince when she moved from Sacramento to Los Angeles; he hired her to play guitar in his band, and they wrote several songs together.

The score for the film was composed by James Cavern and Madison Sipes. Each is a local singer/songwriter/guitarist. They each wrote about half of the score, and collaborated seamlessly while recording it. Coincidentally, both Madi and James went deep in the competition of “The Voice” the same year Dawn & Hawkes did. They all met while working on that show.

“Not Your Year” also has music from other Northern California artists, including the award-winning singer/songwriter/pianist Shannon Curtis, who formerly lived in Sacramento and now resides in Los Angeles.

Dawn & Hawkes Miranda Dawn and Chris Hawkes are husband-and-wife singer/songwriter/guitarists based in Austin, Texas. Dawn & Hawkes appeared on NBC’s “The Voice,” in what Adam Levine called his “favorite performance on the show — ever.” The single from the show appeared on Billboard’s Hot 100. Dawn & Hawkes’ original music reached No. 25 on Billboard’s Folk chart, and No. 2 on the iTunes singer-songwriter album chart. Miranda and Chris have toured with Patty Griffin, Chris Isaak, and other well-known artists. They have performed at legendary showcases such as Austin City Limits and South by Southwest. Their records “Golden Heart” and “Yours and Mine” have been well received by fans and critics. Acoustic Guitar magazine praised their “impeccable vocal harmonies and instrumentation.” The Houston Press wrote, “Outstanding musicians individually, they are absolutely magical together.” The two met at a bar when Chris asked Miranda to dance. The first time they sang together, they knew they had something special. Fans and critics alike have responded to Dawn & Hawkes’ musicianship, emotion, and positive energy.

Madison Sipes Madi is talented beyond her years. An accomplished singer/songwriter/guitarist, she turned 19 while writing music for “Not Your Year.” Her smooth vocals, mature writing, and strong guitar work give her a surprisingly deep sound for such a young artist. With her former band Atlas & Arrows, Madi made one impressive CD (she wrote, played, and sang lead vocals). Madison Sipes and the Painted Blue have performed numerous shows in Northern California. Madi is also working on a new solo album in Los Angeles. Madi is originally from Cameron Park, which is 30 miles from Sacramento.

He’s been busy with his music ever since. His latest record, “Lost and Found,” was released in 2016. As we finished “Not Your Year,” James was on a multi-city tour.
